A group of SCC SSS college
transfer students recently
traveled on a three-day trip
to Wilmington to visit the
UNCW campus as part of the
Student Support Services program’s
transfer initiatives to prepare
students for graduating and/or
transferring to a 4-year university.
“A campus visit is the
student’s opportunity
to see the university in action
and get a feel for what it
will be like should they decide
to attend. It is also a good
time to explore major options,
receive important information
and review academic, social,
personal and professional
opportunities that are made
available,” said Cheryl
Contino-Conner, director of
Student Support Services at
Southwestern Community College.
While touring the academic
departments, they met with
faculty advisors to discuss
possible future enrollment
at the university. The students
were also able to ask questions
about financial aid and other
services that are available
to students.
“It’s great to
have SCC and SSS give us the
opportunity to succeed in
so many ways,” said
Titus Laney V, of Cullowhee.
“I want to thank Cheryl
for coordinating every aspect
of the trip. She opens all
the doors; we just have to
step through and shine.”
SSS is a federally funded,
Title IV grant, supported
through the Department of
Education, which provides
more than $1 million to assist
eligible students with their
goals of graduating and/ or
transferring. For more information,
